DIY: Clean up your social media accounts

Hey everyone!  Here are some steps to follow to make sure you are being safe on social media.  Some of these are extreme, but if you want your privacy while still being connected with select people, this is what I recommend.

Facebook

1.) Make sure all your information is viewable to friends only.  Nothing should be viewable to the public.  I even recommend having a profile picture that doesn't show your face or at least is not a close up of you.

2.) Delete any friend requests you have sent to people you don't know.  (Even if you think you haven't sent any friend requests, double check this!  You never know if someone has logged into your account and sent requests on your behalf or have access to your password.)

3.) You have the option of letting EVERYONE send you friend requests or limiting this to only people who are friends of your existing friends.  I recommend changing this setting to only allowing friend requests from friends of friends.

4.) Be very careful about who you add on Facebook or accept as a friend on Facebook.  Even though now you should have your requests limited to friends who are friends of your friends, that doesn't mean you know the people adding you or the people your friends are friends with.  Review every request and if the person doesn't look familiar, feel comfortable with deleting the request!  Again, DO NOT ACCEPT FRIEND REQUESTS FROM PEOPLE YOU DO NOT KNOW.

5.) People are able to see your friend list, pages and people you follow, and see who follows your public posts unless you change this setting.  I highly recommend changing this so nobody can access your friends list or see the pages you like... Here's how you do it.

On the full Facebook site, click on Friends.

Then click the pencil icon, then click 'Edit Privacy'.

On all 3 options, change them to "Only Me".

Save.

6.) Delete your cover photos, especially if they aren't generic photos.  While a family photo might be cute, you also don't want everybody on Facebook being able to identify you and your family members.

7.) Go through your friends list and delete people you don't know AND delete people who have deleted their Facebook account.  Sometimes, deactivated accounts can be people posing as others, so be careful with these.
